“Writing for Visual Thinkers” was interesting in the fact that it cleared up this idea of brainstorming through writing. I’ve been told what to do and how to do various concept maps and such, but never understood what I was doing or how it helped me. I’m still not sure what to do with either the concept map or mind map, but I do enjoy the free-write exercise.
For me, trying to organize my thoughts is useless. As soon as I think I’ve gotten my things in order, I find gaps or think of new ideas better than what I’ve thought of before. I’ve tried, and I simply just can’t use concept maps. They make me more frustrated than help me. I try really hard to organize things in my life, but they never stay that way. I think I’ve just adjusted to a puzzle life, piecing things together as I see fit. And concept map just doesn’t allow me to do that.
A mind map on the other hand is a little looser. Connecting ideas at random works better than trying to fit them together in groups hieratically. I’m still not a fan though. It’s still too organized for me.
Freewriting is my favorite… of these anyway. Anything that forces me to organize my thoughts essentially is something I’m not a fan of. But with freewriting it’s at least not organized until you read back through it. Creating a freewrite doesn’t require me to think about it while I do it; I can just write and write about what I want – whatever comes to mind, I write it. Only later do I have to go back and weed through my rambles to find things I can work with. I like that freedom.
