Frutiger was born in 1928 in Interlaken, Switzerland. At the age of 16, he began work as an apprentice for a printer. Frutiger then attended the Kunstegewerbeschule in Zurich, studying sculpture and graphic design. Although his interest in sculpture was squandered, Frutiger still preserves his love for it.
Not only has Frutiger designed his own typefaces, but in his career he has also produced several books.
He has also taught typography and illustration at the École Esitenne and the École Nationale Superieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
Most recently, Frutiger was commissioned to design a special edition watch face for the Swiss watchmaker Ventura in 2003. He also designed the wordmark for the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India.
"When I put my pen to a blank sheet, black isn't added but rather the white sheet is deprived of light. ... Thus I also grasped that the empty spaces are the most important aspect of a typeface." -Adrian Frutiger
