Having a film background, and now being a designer, transferring graphics and typography into motion is a really fun process. I was watching Disney's "Monsters Inc." the other day, after having not watched it in a while, and realized how awesome the title sequence is. As good as the movie is, I almost like the title sequence more [Watch here.] But that has a lot of graphic help. Looking at just typography is a little different. You have to create a setting for these words and characters; create a story and movement beyond just moving the type around. Although just stringing type together and moving it looks cool, it's a style that's way over done [Example here.] Most youtube videos you find will be very similar. Although it's fun to look at for a few videos, just parenting pieces together in After Effects gets predictable. In these videos there isn't a setting for the type to live it - it's a 2D space that the words just float around in.
In order to create an illusion of a more 3D world [even in a 2D space if you don't want to bother with 3D effects] the text needs to not only interact with each other, but they can't all interact in the same way. Different effects cause different emotions and reactions. Linking words together and having them all follow the same path and motions is boring. Having one word flip and another move from side to side all while a single letter is growing in scale... that's more exciting [See a fun video here.]
